1. Check your tools:
Are the handles the right height for you? Working with a tool that is too low puts a lot of strain on your back.
Are your tools broken? A wobbly broom head can cause all sorts of problems!
Don’t overload wheelbarrows – they are harder to control and you are likely to twist your back if they tip over.
2. Plan your tasks:
Try to have jobs at different levels on the go, so you don’t spend too long in the same position.
As soon as you feel your body starting to tense up or become uncomfortable in one position, switch to a different task.
Remember you don’t have to finish one task completely before moving on to another one – you can come back to it once your muscles have relaxed.
3. Listen to your body:
Respond to tension in your body, don’t wait for pain before changing what you are doing.
Drinking plenty of water helps every system in your body to function properly and aids flexibility.
Get help for niggles, before they build up and the pain stops you from enjoying your garden.
