Myofascial Release


Myofascial Release is a safe, gentle, hands-on treatment that works with your body to untangle the restrictions that cause pain, tension and inflammation.

At Holisticare we specialise in John F. Barnes Myofascial Release. John Barnes is an American Physiotherapist, who developed this innovative and highly effective whole body approach for the evaluation and treatment of pain and dysfunction.

The treatment works with your body to open up restrictions and scar tissue,  which can cause many symptoms that are not traditionally treated by physiotherapy. It is very effective for problems that have been there for years, as well as acute injuries.

Everything that happens to us from the time we are conceived is recorded within our fascial network (the myofascia). This is a continuous web of fibres that holds our cells in place and connects them all to each other, forming a bio-tensegrity system. 

This 3D network gives you strength, flexibility and stability meaning that no part of the body exists in isolation. The myofascia solidifies and shortens in response to any kind of trauma, repetition of movement or ongoing poor posture. It will slowly tighten, spreading tension throughout your whole body.

There is a gloopy substance between the cells and fibres, call the ground substance. This reacts to physical and emotional stress and becomes more solid, preventing your body from being able to adapt to things and leading to symptoms and illness.

The ground substance is thixotropic, meaning that it becomes more fluid in response to warmth and pressure. During treatment this comes from our hands and we use this reaction to feel where the restrictions are coming from and to gently release them.

As we never force our patients' bodies, it is very safe and enables us to truly follow what they need, getting long-term results. It also allows us to work very deeply without pain, so most of our patients find it a very relaxing treatment.

Assessment

The first treatment always takes 1 hour, which includes assessment and treatment. We ask you to sign a consent form and you will be asked for your contact information and your full medical history. It can be helpful to bring a list of any medication you are taking. If you have a complex medical history you may choose to email it to info@holisticare.co.uk prior to your appointment, to save some time on the day.

We will then assess your posture and look at any movements that are restricted by pain or stiffness. It is common for symptoms to occur in a different part of the body to where the problem originates, so treatment may not always be where you are experiencing pain.

Myofascial Release is a hands-on treatment that works best on skin, rather than through material. You may therefore be asked to take clothes off down to your underwear, depending on the condition being treated. Some people prefer to bring shorts to change into – this is a personal preference.

Once the assessment is complete, we will discuss the treatment with you. The number of sessions required varies from patient to patient, even with the same symptoms, as the technique works with your body. As a general rule, the longer a symptom has been present, the longer it takes to resolve it. It may be possible to give you an idea of how many sessions you will require, but we cannot tell exactly.

Treatment

It is very important to communicate with us how you feel your treatment is progressing and what your expectations are. Myofascial Release is not a 'quick fix' but if you are able to complete the course of treatment that your body needs, it is often possible to get long lasting results that enable you to manage even chronic conditions yourself.

During your treatment, you are encouraged to tell us what you are feeling. This helps us to follow your body and also helps you to work with your body day to day. However it is important to tell your therapist immediately if you want them to stop whatever they are doing.

Some people feel immediate benefits after the treatment, while others find that symptoms change over the next couple of days. Everybody will respond in their own way and we will help you to work with your body.

Healing crisis

Occasionally, symptoms may get worse before they get better. This is a normal response to treatments like this that affect the whole body and is nothing to worry about. Drinking plenty of water can help, as can following what your body needs. Please feel free to call us if you are concerned about what you are experiencing.

Intensive Treatment: a bespoke programme for your individual needs


Imagine how it would feel for your symptoms to change in just 1 week.

The intensive programme is a one, two or three week programme designed to allow the patient to focus on their own physical and emotional needs away from the distractions and stresses of everyday life and  includes 15 hours of Myofascial Release treatment over the course of 5 or 6 days (Mon-Sat).

Please note that the one week programme is only suitable for patients who are able to continue receiving Myofascial Release treatment regularly following their intensive week. If you are unsure how long you will need, please call us on 01279 718331 and we will be happy to advise you.

The programme includes:
  • A free telephone consultation to discuss your needs.
  • A full assessment of your medical history and your current condition.
  • Hands-on evaluation at the start of the programme, which is monitored daily.
  • 3 therapist hours of treatment daily, split into 2 or 3 sessions. Treatments can be spread over 5 or 6 days as our centre is open Monday to Saturday. Please let us know if you have a preference.
  • At least one multi–therapist treatment* during the week.
  • Treatment focussed on your individual needs and goals.
  • Self-help instruction, allowing you to continue with the progress gained during your treatments.
  • Preferential rates at local hotels and B&B's.

You will receive treatment from all of our Myofascial Release therapists throughout the week, allowing you to benefit from the experience and slightly different approaches of each of our team.
*Multi-therapist treatments are counted as treatment time x number of therapists. For example a 1 hour treatment with 2 therapists = 2 hours of treatment time.

Who is it for?
  • Individuals looking for a physical and emotional breakthrough to change their acute or chronic pain or symptoms.
  • People who have several different problems contributing to their symptoms.
  • Anyone wishing to invest in their health and wellbeing.
  • Anyone finding it difficult to fit treatments into their busy life will benefit by devoting a few days to treatment on an intensive treatment programme.
  • People who find that a week is too long in-between treatments. This may apply to you if you find that returning to your usual routine and activities affects the benefits that you have gained during your treatment.
  • Perhaps you live too far from Holisticare to have regular treatments. Booking an intensive treatment programme and staying locally (we can recommend some nice places), will allow you to benefit from having treatment every day and let you rest after each session, without having to worry about a long or demanding journey home.
  • Patients who are pre or post surgery. An intensive treatment programme will help prepare the body for surgery and speed up the healing process once surgery has taken place.

Frequently asked questions

Can I have extra treatments while I am with you?

Yes, you can add as many extra hours as you wish (subject to therapist availability). These hours are charged at our standard rates.

Can I have all my treatments with the same therapist?
Our intensive treatment programme is designed so you experience treatments with all our therapists over the course of the week. This is beneficial as we all have slightly different approaches. If you have a special request please call us on 01279 718331 to discuss.

Can I exercise while on the intensive programme?
Generally we advise avoiding anything that you know will increase your symptoms, however speak to your therapist for specific advice.

Can I go to work while on the programme?
It’s your choice, however we would ask you to think about planning your week to minimise stress and travel times so you get the best out of your sessions.

My usual therapist does not do Myofascial Release, can I still book an intensive programme?
Yes, Myofascial Release works well with many other therapies and we are happy to liaise with your regular therapist if you would like us to.

I am pregnant, can I still book an intensive programme?
Yes, Myofascial Release is safe through all three trimesters and can help with painful conditions, as well as being very relaxing and beneficial in preparing the body for birth.

I am having an operation, is it still ok to come for Myofascial release and if so how soon after my surgery can I come?
As Myofascial Release is safe, gentle and speeds up healing, we would recommend you come as soon as possible after discharge. We would also suggest booking a session or two before your operation to help prepare your body for surgery.

How much does the intensive treatment programme cost?
Prices start at £1100 per week.

Women's Health


There are many women who live with symptoms such as incontinence, burning, pelvic pain and menstrual cramps. Some have had investigations and have either been told there is nothing wrong with them, or that they can't be helped.

It is very important to speak to your doctor if you have any unexplained problems. However, if you have done so and are still suffering, Myofascial Release may be able to help relieve your symptoms.

Restrictions anywhere in your body can cause irritation and inflammation. This is particularly true in the pelvic area, as everything is in such close proximity. Scar tissue, old injuries and tight muscles put a lot of strain on pain sensitive structures, leading to problems for many years if left untreated.

 Myofascial Release is one of the few treatments that is safe in all stages of pregnancy.

1st Trimester
  • Preparing your body to help it cope with the changes to come

Speeding recovery from the trauma of birth

Even straightforward births can be traumatic for babies, as the sudden change in temperature, sounds and sights can be very overwhelming for them.

If there have been any complications such as assisted delivery or special care, this is exaggerated.

By releasing this tension at an early age, we can prevent it building up and causing problems later in life.


Relief from symptoms of colic and reflux

Tightness in your baby’s diaphragm can make colic and reflux worse.

By gently releasing the diaphragm, we can quickly settle these painful conditions, making life more comfortable for your baby.


Relaxation of tight, painful muscles, eg torticollis

Babies' muscles can become tight due to a congenital problem, or as a reaction to positioning in the womb or during birth.

This tightness can prevent them from feeding and sleeping comfortably and will get more painful the longer it stays.

By observing and feeling where the tightness is coming from, we are able to gently release it and reduce the pain.


Reduction in joint pain, stiffness and swelling, eg tallipes

Most joint pain in babies comes from a congenital condition or injury during or after birth.

While we are unable to change joint deformities, we can reduce inflammation, pain and swelling and help you and your baby manage their condition.


Gentle treatment for head shape changes

Babies who have had an assisted birth with forceps or ventouse often have an altered head shape. Although this will normally improve itself, sometimes treatment is needed.

Babies can also get a flattened head on one side if their neck is tight, preventing them from turning equally to both sides.

Myofascial Release treatment creates the conditions to allow your baby’s head to slowly return to normal, without forcing or causing pain.


Help for breathing difficulties

Babies can become congested after birth if they have been compressed from pushing for too long, or if they are unable to position themselves correctly for birth. This can tighten their diaphragm and other muscles round the ribcage.

Assuming that any medical treatment has been carried out, we are able to release the muscles that your baby uses for breathing. This makes the work of breathing easier, allowing more oxygen per breath.

Welcome to the Free Yourself Hour at Holisticare

Six one-hour weekly sessions offering a calm space where you will learn how to listen to your body and work with it to access the healing potential within.

Progressing from an introduction to Myofascial relaxation and stretching to more advanced techniques, you will discover how to release your own restrictions to enhance the benefit of your treatments and prevent build up in the future.

Guided by an experienced therapist you will learn techniques and visualisations that you will be able to practise on your own, wherever you are. Each session will build on the previous week, eventually covering the whole body. Some sessions may also incorporate equipment (supplied).

Series of six sessions - £120.

These sessions are suitable for people of all abilities, age 16 and over - no preparation required.

Please wear loose comfortable clothing and bring a pillow and blanket for your comfort.

Falls Prevention


Falls Prevention

“A fall is an event that results in a person coming to rest unintentionally on the ground or floor or other lower level. Half of people who fall will fall again in the next 12 months.” Chartered Society of Physiotherapy

There are many risk factors for falling, including lack of physical activity, disease, surgery, trauma, advancing age, environmental hazards and previous falls.

At Holisticare, we work with our patients and their carers to prevent falls by:

  • Identifying patients who are at risk of falling
  • Treating the patient to reduce pain, stiffness and swelling
  • Devising a personal exercise programme to improve strength, balance and mobility
  • Gait re-education to improve safety and confidence
  • Teaching the patient how to safely get up from the ground
  • Assessing risks in the home and other environments
  • Referring the patient to other professionals as required
  • Liaising with family, carers and other professionals involved in the care of at risk patients
  • Teaching carers how to safely assist the patient

 

Each person will have a different history and risks, and therefore the specific treatment and advice given will be individual to that patient.

 

Any specific falls assessment, exercises and advice will be given by one of our Physiotherapists, but the hands-on Myofascial Release treatment may be carried out by any of our therapists.

 

Patients may be referred by their family or another health professional particularly for our falls prevention advice and treatment. All our therapists are also continually assessing their patients and if they are concerned, they will speak to the patient (and carer when appropriate) about how we can help.

 

This service is provided as part of our usual charging structure, based on time, and does not have a set price. This is because we do not know in advance how much treatment will be needed, and we see our Myofascial Release treatment as integral to falls prevention.
